Joint Korea-Japan Special Session Held at the Annual Conference of the Japan Association for African Studies
On Saturday 9 May, a joint Korea-Japan special session was held at the annual conference of the Japan Association for African Studies (JAAS) at Nagoya University’s Higashiyama Campus.
Held under the theme ‘East Asia?Africa Relations in the Era of Anti-globalisation’, the session aimed to critically examine the changing dynamics and implications of relations between East Asia and Africa within an international environment characterised by growing scepticism towards globalisation, the spread of protectionism and deepening geopolitical fragmentation.
Chaired by Professor Shinichi Takeuchi of Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, the session featured the following presentations: ▲Why do African youth march under a Japanese pirate flag? (Professor Jeon On-ri, Kyonggi University) ▲When food travels without its people: the globalisation of Japanese cuisine in Nigeria (Hisashi Matsumoko, Researcher at Yokohama National University) ▲Civil society, citizenship, and development cooperation in Nigeria: GONGOs in Africa?East Asia relations in the era of anti-globalism (Kyung-hoon Choi, Integrated Master’s and PhD student at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies) ▲History and current status of TICAD (Keichi Shirato, Professor at Ritsumeikan University). Subsequently, Professor Kim Su-won of Hankuk University of Foreign Studies provided commentary on each presentation within the context of ‘Asia?Africa relations in light of decoloniality’.
Furthermore, through exchanges with major research organisations such as the Japan-Africa Society and the Japan Society for International Development, the Foundation created opportunities to produce original research on Africa from an East Asian perspective and strengthened academic ties between the two countries.
